Madonna To Headline Super Bowl Halftime Show!
It is official! Madonna will headline the Super Bowl halftime show, woohoo! This is going to be one heck of a show. The rumors have been circulating for a while that Madonna would perform at the Super Bowl halftime show in Indianapolis. NBC and the NFL made the official announcement Sunday night, that for the first time ever at a Super Bowl she will take the stage. It is being reported that she will work with choreographer Jamie King, who is best known for choreographing the Cirque du Soleil squad, to put together what I have no doubt will be a spectacular performance. It is Madonna, so that means expect the unexpected and expect it to be freaking awesome. As I am sure you are all aware, the big game and the big show will take place on February 5th. I have to say hearing this news was music to my ears. I am a huge Madonna fan and am lucky enough to have seen her in concert numerous times, so I am fully aware of what kind of killer show she puts on. Apple juice can pose a health risk _ from calories

Chart shows per capita consumption of juice
It's true ? apple juice can pose a risk to your health. But not necessarily from the trace amounts of arsenic that people are arguing about.
Despite the government's consideration of new limits on arsenic, nutrition experts say apple juice's real danger is to waistlines and children's teeth. Apple juice has few natural nutrients, lots of calories and, in some cases, more sugar than soda has. It trains a child to like very sweet things, displaces better beverages and foods, and adds to the obesity problem, its critics say.
"It's like sugar water," said Judith Stern, a nutrition professor at the University of California, Davis, who has consulted for candy makers as well as for Weight Watchers. "I won't let my 3-year-old grandson drink apple juice."
Many juices are fortified with vitamins, so they're not just empty calories. But that doesn't appease some nutritionists.
"If it wasn't healthy in the first place, adding vitamins doesn't make it into a health food," and if it causes weight gain, it's not a healthy choice, said Karen Ansel, a registered dietitian in New York and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says juice can be part of a healthy diet, but its policy is blunt: "Fruit juice offers no nutritional benefit for infants younger than 6 months" and no benefits over whole fruit for older kids.
Kids under 12 consume 28 percent of all juice and juice drinks, according to the academy. Nationwide, apple juice is second only to orange juice in popularity. Americans slurp 267 ounces of apple juice on average each year, according to the Food Institute's Almanac of Juice Products and the Juice Products Association, a trade group. Lots more is consumed as an ingredient in juice drinks and various foods.
Only 17 percent of the apple juice sold in the U.S. is produced here. The rest comes from other countries, mostly China, Argentina, Chile and Brazil, the association says.
Television's Dr. Mehmet Oz made that a key point a few months ago when he raised an alarm ? some say a false alarm ? over arsenic in apple juice, based on tests his show commissioned by a private lab. The Food and Drug Administration said that its own tests disagreed and that apple juice is safe.
However, on Wednesday, after Consumer Reports did its own tests on several juice brands and called along with other consumer groups for stricter standards, the FDA said it will examine whether its restrictions on the amount of arsenic allowed in apple juice are stringent enough.
Some forms of arsenic, such as the type found in pesticides, can be toxic and may pose a cancer risk if consumed at high levels or over a long period.
All juice sold in the United States must be safe and meet U.S. standards, said Pat Faison, technical director for the juice association. As for making good nutrition choices, "a lot of the information that people need about fruit juices is on the label," she said.
So what's on those labels?
Carbohydrates, mostly sugars, in a much higher concentration than in milk. Juice has a small amount of protein and minerals and lacks the fiber in whole fruit, the pediatrics academy notes.
Drinking juice delivers a lot of calories quickly so you don't realize how much you've consumed, whereas you would have to eat a lot of apples to get the same amount, and "you would feel much, much more full from the apples," Ansel said.
"Whole fruits are much better for you," said Dr. Frank Greer, a University of Wisconsin, Madison, professor and former head of the pediatrics academy's nutrition committee.
He noted that the WIC program ? the U.S. Department of Agriculture's nutrition program for Women, Infants and Children ? revised its rules in 2005 to replace juice with baby food fruits and vegetables for children over 6 months. More than half of all infants born in the U.S. are eligible for WIC, and the government "really cut back severely on the ability of mothers to get fruit juices" through the program, Greer said.
If you or your family drinks juice, here is some advice from nutrition experts:
?Choose a juice fortified with calcium and vitamin D-3.
?Give children only pasteurized juice ? that's the only type safe from germs that can cause serious disease.
?Don't give juice before 6 months of age, and never put it in bottles or covered cups that allow babies and children to consume it throughout the day, which can cause tooth decay. For the same reason, don't give infants juice at bedtime.
?Limit juice to 4 to 6 ounces per day for children ages 1 to 6, and 8 to 12 ounces for those ages 7 to 18.
?Encourage kids to eat fruit.
?Don't be swayed by healthy-sounding label claims. "No sugar added" doesn't mean it isn't full of naturally occurring sugar. And "cholesterol-free" is silly ? only animal products contain cholesterol.

Russia's ruling party wary as nation votes (AP)
MOSCOW ? Russia's long dominant party appeared likely to lose its edge as voters across the sprawling country cast ballots for Parliament on Sunday, many of them frustrated over corruption and the gap between ordinary Russians and the super-rich.
Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's United Russia party has signaled it is worried about polls showing it could receive only a bit more than half the votes, cracking down on an independent election monitor and warning of political instability.
The Kremlin is determined to see United Russia maintain its two-thirds majority, an unassailable dominance that allows it to amend the constitution. Both Putin and President Dmitry Medvedev made final appeals for the party on Friday, the last day of campaigning, warning that a parliament made up of diverse political camps would be incapable of making decisions.
The view underlines Russian authorities' continuing discomfort with political pluralism and preference for top-down operation. As president in 2000-2008, Putin's strongman leadership style won wide support among Russians exhausted by a decade of post-Soviet uncertainty.
But United Russia has become increasingly disliked, seen as stifling opposition, representing a corrupt bureaucracy and often called "the party of crooks and thieves." Putin needs the party to do well in the parliamentary election to pave the way for his return to the presidency in a vote now three months away.
With so much at stake, there are doubts about how honestly the election will be conducted. An interim report from an elections-monitoring mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe noted that "most parties have expressed a lack of trust in the fairness of the electoral process."
The only independent Russian election-monitoring group, Golos, has come under strong pressure in the week leading up to the vote.
Golos' leader, Lilya Shibanova, was held at a Moscow airport for 12 hours upon her Friday return from Poland after refusing to give her laptop computer to security officers, said Golos' deputy director Grigory Melkonyants. On Friday, the group was fined the equivalent of $1,000 by a Moscow court for violating a law that prohibits publication of election opinion research for five days before a vote.
Putin last Sunday accused Western governments of trying to influence the election. Golos is funded by grants from the United States and Europe.
Golos has complied some 5,300 complaints of election-law violations ahead of the vote. Most are linked to United Russia, the party headed by Putin, who has dominated Russian politics for a dozen years as president and prime minister.
Roughly a third of the complainants ? mostly government employees and students ? say employers and professors are pressuring them to vote for the party.
Only seven parties have been allowed to field candidates for parliament this year, while the most vocal opposition groups have been denied registration and barred from campaigning.
Some of the parties in the running are unlikely to clear the 7-percent threshold for winning seats, which are proportionally allocated; critics say the 7-percent level is prohibitively high, effectively ensuring that most minority views are denied representation.

Performing is my passion. Being onstage is at once exhilarating, beguiling, and fulfilling. But it's hard. Being an actor is a difficult career for countless reasons, not the least of which are the inconsistency of the work (actors are the serial unemployed) and the frequent, harsh criticism to which we're constantly subjected. Actors are no strangers to self-doubt, fear, and rejection. So why put up with it? What keeps me coming back? It's the community.
The love, support, and respect the members of the theater community have for one another is unparalleled. Say what you want about us wacky drama-types, but one thing that makes our business special is our loyalty, our fierce commitment to one another, and our mutual respect. Being an artist is hard, but if it weren't for the community, it would be impossible.
It's an old clich? that gay people wind up in the theater. Rather than fight the clich?, we should celebrate it: for one, it's often true, and two, our diversity is one of the things that makes our industry unique and ahead-of-the-curve progressive. And is it any wonder? So many gay kids are bullied, taunted, and generally made to feel bad about who they are -- remember that self-doubt, fear, and rejection I mentioned? Why wouldn't they flock to a trade where there is community, where their individuality is not only respected but celebrated? I am so proud to be a member of this family.
"Everyone deserves to be respected for who they are," is the central tenet of the It Gets Better Project, and I could not agree more. When I was asked to participate in the "A Better Holiday" concert at Joe's Pub in New York City benefiting the project, I said "yes" before I could even think. Why? Because our community is also based on the idea of mutual respect. Because without the legions of talented gay people who work in our industry, it would be a mere shell of itself. Oh, yeah, and because I think this is a human rights cause worth fighting for.
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender teens are bullied and ostracized in epidemic proportions. It's disgusting, and it must change. We have other generations to thank for the strides we made in the civil rights movement -- but our work is not done. My generation has high expectations for humanity's progress, and my patience is worn thin by the continued presence of intolerance in this country.
The greatest thing about living in America is our freedom to choose the lives we want to live. This is the only country in the world that is constitutionally dedicated to the pursuit of happiness. Everybody has that right. Everybody. The It Gets Better Project represents all of us who support LGBT youths with a unified message of love, compassion and support. Its famous pledge is as follows:
I am proud to spread this message to the teens and adults who suffer from bullying or intolerance due to their sexual orientation. Everyone deserves to be respected for who they are. I pledge to spread this message to my friends, family and neighbors. I'll speak up against hate and intolerance whenever I see it, at school and at work. I'll provide hope for lesbian, gay, bi, trans and other bullied teens by letting them know that It Gets Better.
I can't wait to sing in this concert and lend my voice to such a beautiful message.

A Better Holiday: A Concert to Benefit the It Gets Better Project, which celebrates the holiday season with songs of hope, will be held at Joe's Pub Dec. 5 at 9:30 p.m.
The evening will include performances from Tony Award nominee Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon), Nellie McKay, Rebecca Naomi Jones (American Idiot, Passing Strange), Monica Raymund (The Good Wife), Dee Roscioli (Wicked), Michael Arden (Big River), Tituss Burgess (The Little Mermaid, Guys & Dolls) and Max von Essen (Les Miserables), among others.
Proceeds from the performance will benefit the It Gets Better Project, an organization created by Dan Savage and Terry Miller in September 2010 in response to the number of LGBT youth who took their lives after being bullied in school.
A Better Holiday will be presented by Rebecca Atwood and Kyle Luker of The Group Entertainment.

Lawmaker calls for FTC probe into Carrier IQ (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. Representative Edward Markey on Friday asked the Federal Trade Commission to investigate whether software maker Carrier IQ violated millions of mobile phone users' privacy rights.
Carrier IQ makes software that companies including AT&T Inc and Sprint Nextel install in mobile devices. It runs in the background, transmitting data that the software maker says its customer companies use to better understand their devices and networks, which allows them to improve their services.
Carrier IQ came under fire following reports that its software collects and transmits potentially sensitive data about the phone users.
"Consumers and families need to understand who is siphoning off and storing their personal information every time they use their smart phone," Markey said in a statement.
Hacking expert Trevor Eckhart this week released a 17-minute YouTube video showing software tracking when he turns his HTC smartphone - powered by Google Inc's Android operating system - on and off, punches numbers to make a call and writes a text message.
In a letter to FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz, Markey asked the agency to investigate this under its mandate to protect consumers from unfair or deceptive acts or practices.
Senator Al Franken on Thursday sent a letter to Carrier IQ, asking for details on the types of data its software collects and what it does with that information.
The company said in a statement on Thursday that its software collects data needed to diagnose network and device problems, but does not record, store or transmit the contents of text messages, email, photographs, audio or video.
"Our software makes your phone better by delivering intelligence on the performance of mobile devices and networks to help (mobile) operators provide optimal service efficiency," the company statement said.
Carrier IQ has denied accusations of wiretap law violations and allegations that its software tracks keystrokes made on mobile devices.
The company could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday.
Research In Motion said it does not install or authorize its carrier partners to install Carrier IQ's software on its BlackBerry smartphones. Nokia also said its phones do not use the software.
Apple Inc said that some devices, including iPhones, that run on its iOS 4 operating system use the Carrier IQ software, but that it does not work with the newer iOS 5.
An FTC spokeswoman said the agency had received Markey's letter but had no further comment.

ATLANTA (AP) ? Businessman Herman Cain suspended his bid for the Republican presidential nomination on Saturday following a steady drumbeat of sexual misconduct allegations he said were harming his family and drowning out his ability to deliver his message.
With just one month to go until the lead-off Iowa caucuses, Cain's announcement is tantamount to a concession. Still, he told supporters, he planned to continue his efforts to influence Washington and announced "Plan B" ? what he called a grassroots effort to return government to the people.
It was a remarkable turnabout for a man who just weeks ago vaulted out of nowhere to the top of the Republican presidential field, fueled by a populist, outsider appeal and his catchy 9-9-9 tax overhaul plan which called for a 9 percent tax on income, a 9 percent business tax and a 9 percent national sales tax.
Cain, the former Godfather's Pizza chief executive, has never held elected office, but the black Georgia businessman rose to become an unexpected front-runner in the volatile Republican race just weeks ago as other candidates such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann stumbled. Cain enjoyed strong support from conservatives looking for an alternative to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, whose policy shifts on abortion, gay rights and health care reform were viewed warily by a large segment of core Republican voters.
Polls show that the main beneficiary of Cain's withdrawal is likely to be former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, who has risen steadily in surveys nationally and in early voting states. Gingrich has now emerged as the main challenger to fellow front-runner Romney in the Republican race to take on President Barack Obama next year.
Cain's announcement came five days after an Atlanta-area woman claimed she and Cain had an affair for more than a decade, a claim that followed several allegations of sexual harassment against him.
"Now, I have made many mistakes in life. Everybody has. I've made mistakes professionally, personally, as a candidate, in terms of how I run my campaign. And I take responsibility for the mistakes I've made, and I have been the very first to own up to any mistakes I've made," he said.
But Cain intoned: "I am at peace with my God. I am at peace with my wife. And she is at peace with me."
Cain denounced the accusations of impropriety against him as "false and unproven" but said that they had been hurtful to his family, particularly his wife, Gloria.
"So as of today, with a lot of prayer and soul-searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign. I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distractions and the continued hurt caused on me and my family," a tired-looking Cain told about 400 supporters.
Saturday's event was a bizarre piece of political theater even for a campaign that has seemed to thrive on defying convention.
Cain marked the end of his bid at what was supposed to be the grand opening of his new campaign headquarters in Atlanta. The space was rented when Cain was surprisingly leading the Republican pack.
Minutes before he took the stage to pull the plug on his campaign with his wife at his side, aides and supporters took to the podium to urge attendees to vote for Cain and travel to early voting states to rev up support for his bid.
"Join the Cain train," David McCleary, Cain's Georgia director, urged the audience.
Cain said he would offer an endorsement in the near future and he predicted a scramble among Republicans in the field to win the backing of his conservative, tea party base supporting limited government, spending cuts and no tax increases.
Former Republican rivals quickly issued statements Saturday praising Cain's conservative credentials and appeal.
Cain vaulted to the top of the Republican presidential field in October. But he then fumbled policy questions on issues from Libya to abortion, leaving some to wonder whether he was ready for the presidency. Then it was revealed at the end of October that the National Restaurant Association had paid settlements to two women who claimed Cain sexually harassed them while he was president of the organization.
A third woman told The Associated Press that Cain made inappropriate sexual advances but that she didn't file a complaint. A fourth woman also stepped forward to accuse Cain of groping her in a car in 1997.
Cain has denied wrongdoing in all cases, and continued to do so Saturday.
Polls suggest his popularity has suffered. A Des Moines Register poll released Friday showed Cain's support plunging, with backing from 8 percent of Republican caucusgoers in Iowa, compared with 23 percent a month ago. The Iowa caucuses on Jan. 3 kick off the state-by-state contests to choose delegates to the party's national nominating convention.
But Cain said Saturday he would not go away and would continue trying to influence Washington from the outside,
He announced the formation of CainSolutions.com, which he said was a grassroots effort to bring government back to the people.
"I am not going to be silenced, and I am not going away. And therefore, as of today, Plan B. Plan B," he said.

HONG KONG (AP) ? Fast-growing Asian and Middle Eastern airlines have signed orders recently for hundreds of new airplanes ? now they face the problem of finding enough pilots to fly them. For safety-conscious travelers, that means sticking with the big, well known airlines who can afford to lure the best staff as the scramble to fill the cockpit intensifies.
While there have been warnings for several years of a pilot shortage in Asia, the latest orders add to the urgency. The region is forecast to account for the lion's share of global aircraft deliveries over the next two decades as demand for air travel surges amid strong economic growth. It's also forecast to need the largest number of new pilots and the widening shortage of experienced staff is raising safety concerns and playing havoc with flight schedules.
"Quite a number of carriers are increasing their orders. So where are the pilots coming from? The shortage is going to manifest itself certainly as we go into next year because there'll be a lot of planes coming in then, so these guys are going to have a hard time finding the pilots to fly them," said Shukor Yusof, an aviation analyst with Standard & Poor's.
Last month, Indonesia's Lion Air ordered 230 Boeing Co. 737s with options for 150 more. Qatar Airways ordered at least 55 jets from Airbus SAS while Emirates ordered 50 Boeing 777s. From 2011 to 2030, Boeing and Airbus both predict Asia will account for about a third of global aircraft deliveries worth a total of more than $1 trillion.
To keep up with growth and replace retiring pilots, the International Civil Aviation Organization forecasts Asia will need 229,676 new pilots over the next two decades ? up from 50,344 in 2010. In the most likely scenario, Asia will be short about 9,000 pilots a year because it will need about 14,000 but have capacity to train only about 5,000.
"Never in human history have we seen a time when 2 billion people will enter the middle class and demand air travel. That time is now," said William Voss, president of the Washington, D.C.-based Flight Safety Foundation.
Some airlines are already acting.
Emirates has announced plans to set up a dedicated $109 million flight training center in Dubai that will be able to train up to 400 students at a time. Earlier this year, Canadian flight-training company CAE Inc. said it was expanding its training center in Zhuhai, China that it runs jointly with China Southern Airlines.
But Roei Ganzarski, Boeing's chief customer officer for flight services, warns that recruiting pilots will be a long-term problem for the aviation industry. "We've already heard of a few airlines that have either reduced their operations or even grounded their airplanes because they don't have enough people to fly them."
Training a commercial airline pilot takes time ? up to three or four years. Trainees must obtain a Private Pilot's License and then a Commercial Pilot's License. Then they need an Air Transport Pilot's License ? the advanced credential required to fly a commercial airliner ? which involves logging about 1,500 flying hours. It's an expensive and time-consuming entire process that rookies starting from scratch will need two to three years to complete.
Once they're hired by an airline as a first officer, candidates will need more time for additional conversion training for the type of aircraft they'll be flying, which could take another year.
Aviation industry executives say small airlines will be hit hardest because they can't compete with big, rich carriers such as Dubai-based Emirates, the Middle East's biggest airline.
Capt. Alan Stealey, senior vice president for flight operations, said Emirates isn't facing problems recruiting its target of 600 pilots this year, up from about 400 or 450 in past years.
Emirates lures staff with generous salaries and benefits. First officers earn tax-free annual salaries averaging $95,000 while captains get about $135,000 as well as free housing, medical benefits and tuition fees.
Emirates also operates some of the world's newest, most advanced jets ? another draw for recruits.
"We're an airline of choice from a pilot's point of view," said Stealey. "The shortage will not be in carriers like Emirates," but rather will hit smaller, regional carriers hardest, he predicted.
The crash of an Air India Express jet in May 2010 highlighted the problems smaller airlines are facing. An investigation blamed the Serbian pilot for the disaster in which a Boeing 737 operated by the national carrier's low-cost arm crashed while landing at Mangalore's airport, killing 158 people.
The probe found that the pilot slept through more than half the flight and woke up disoriented when it was time to land the aircraft.
India's pilot shortage has been driven by fierce demand as a slew of carriers have started up in the past decade and expanded rapidly. Pilots complain that they don't have enough rest time between flights, a violation of international aviation safety practices.
Indian airlines have been forced to look abroad for staff, which comes with its own problems as some Eastern European pilots had difficulties with English ? the international language of aviation.
By hiring pilots from countries where English isn't spoken widely, "you have to accept that there's potential for confusion, or less comprehension," said Gideon Ewers, a spokesman for the U.K.-based International Federation of Airline Pilots' Associations.
Airlines across Asia have been recruiting foreigners. China has at least 1,300 foreign flight captains, according to the state-run China Daily newspaper. Garuda Indonesia and Korean Airlines have also been forced to hire foreign pilots. In China, state media quoted an American pilot for Spring Airways complaining he had to rely on his Chinese first officer to communicate with air traffic controllers who wouldn't or couldn't speak English.
Experts say while some smaller airlines are forced to hire pilots on short-term contracts, they don't have as much control over the quality of the pilot's training and experience as big airlines with cadet programs do. The result is that while airlines may have crews that meet the minimum training requirements, some airlines will have crews that are excellent but others are "dangerously marginal," said Voss.
At airlines where safety and training standards are closely followed, the pilots in the cockpit "correct the missteps and correct problems on the spot. All of those little corrections eventually define the safety culture of that airline," said Voss.
"If the crews are all on six-month contracts, that doesn't happen. Risky behavior goes unchallenged, professionalism decays, and disaster inevitably follows."
A potentially even graver shortage looms of maintenance personnel, aviation groups say. Boeing forecasts that Asia will need a quarter-million new technicians over the next two decades, up from about 46,500 now.
"It is a more difficult problem to solve," said Voss,"since the job is very unattractive and harder to train."

Asian markets soar on central bank action (AP)
BANGKOK ? Asian stocks soared Thursday after six major central banks acted to lower borrowing costs in hopes of preventing a global credit crisis, but European markets opened mostly lower as the euphoria wore off.
Benchmark oil rose above $100 per barrel and the dollar was steady against the euro and higher against the yen.
Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.2 percent to 5,513.64 in early trading. But Germany's DAX fell 0.6 percent to 6,053.26 and France's CAC-40 was 0.5 percent lower at 3,138.95.
Following a strong rally Wednesday, Wall Street also appeared headed lower. Dow Jones industrial futures fell 0.3 percent at 11,999 and S&P 500 futures were 0.4 percent lower at 1,240.50.
Earlier, Asian markets posted sharp gains. Japan's Nikkei 225 index jumped 1.9 percent to close at 8,597.38. South Korea's Kospi surged 3.7 percent to 1,916.18 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng vaulted 5.6 percent to 19,002.26.
Benchmarks in Australia, India, Singapore and Taiwan all rose more than 2 percent. In mainland China, the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index gained 2.3 percent to 2,386.86.
On Wednesday, the central banks of Europe, the U.S., Britain, Canada, Japan and Switzerland reduced the rates that banks must pay to borrow dollars in order to make loans cheaper so that financial institutions can continue to operate smoothly.
"The moves were cheered by markets as it shows central banks are willing to work together to ease Europe's sovereign debt crisis," Stan Shamu of IG Markets in Melbourne said in a report.
Separately, China's central bank also acted to release money for lending and help shore up slowing growth by lowering bank reserve levels for the first time in three years. The action late Wednesday signaled a key change in monetary policy, analysts said.
"I think the government has the faith now that inflation has peaked, and that now it's time to change the monetary policy from a tight one to a loose one," said Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong.
Chinese banks soared on the news. Hong Kong-listed Industrial & Commercial Bank of China, the world's largest bank by market value, surged 10.7 percent.
By easing reserve requirements, the central bank made available some 350 billion yuan ($55 billion) that otherwise would have been locked up in reserves. Given typical investment trends, much of that money could find its way back into the property sector.
Hong Kong-listed China Resources Land rose 10.2 percent and China Overseas Land & Investment climbed 13.2 percent.
Steel and industrial shares also jumped. Japanese steel producer JFE Holdings shot up 8.9 percent and South Korean steel giant POSCO gained 5.9 percent.
Worries about Europe's financial system ? and the reluctance of the European Central Bank to intervene ? have caused borrowing rates for European nations to skyrocket. Central banks will now make it cheaper for commercial banks in their countries to borrow dollars, the dominant currency of trade.
But it does little to solve the underlying problem of mountains of government debt. Analysts said that unless there is dramatic action at an upcoming summit of European leaders on the debt crisis, markets are in for further shaky times.
"Until we see some definitely agreed on and, when necessary, legislated initiatives from Europe, optimism can be premature," said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney. "Until we see that sort of thing, there will be a ceiling on the rally."
The central banks' move sent the Dow Jones industrial average soaring 490 points, its biggest gain since March 2009 and the seventh-largest of all time.
The Dow rose 4.2 percent to close at 12,045. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed up 4.3 percent at 1,247. The Nasdaq composite index closed up 4.2 percent at 2,620.
In energy trading, benchmark crude for January delivery was up 31 cents to $100.67 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 57 cents to settle to $100.36 on Wednesday.
In currencies, the euro was nearly unchanged at $1.3433 from $1.3435 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar rose to 77.64 yen from 77.56 yen.

China 'keen' to invest in West's infrastructure
BEIJING (AP) ? China's sovereign wealth fund wants to invest in improving neglected U.S. and European roads and other infrastructure to spur global growth, the fund's chairman said in comments published Monday.
The announcement reflects a shift in strategy for the $410 billion fund, which was created in 2007. Until now, it has limited its investments mostly to small stakes in publicly traded companies to avoid stirring political opposition overseas.
China Investment Corp. wants to begin in Britain by teaming up with fund managers or investing directly in infrastructure projects, Lou Jiwei said in a commentary in London's Financial Times newspaper.
"China is keen to get involved" in improving U.S. and European infrastructure, which "badly needs more investment," Lou wrote. He cited energy, water, transport, digital communications and waste disposal but gave no indication of possible projects or the size of Chinese investment.
Some commentators in both Europe and China have suggested Beijing might use its $3.2 trillion in foreign reserves to gain leverage on political or trade issues at a time when other governments urgently want investment.
Also Monday, Commerce Minister Chen Deming said at a business conference that he wants to send a delegation to Europe next year to find investment opportunities, according to the director of the ministry press office, Huang Minghai. The proposal still requires Cabinet approval.
Beijing is encouraging Chinese companies to expand investments abroad to diversify an economy that relies heavily on exports and investment. It has sent trade and investment delegations in the past to the United States, Europe and elsewhere.
CIC was created to invest abroad in hopes of earning a better return on China's foreign reserves, the bulk of which are in U.S. and European government bonds. It says investments are made on commercial rather than political grounds.
The move into infrastructure probably reflects CIC's commercial views, rather than those of the government, said Citigroup economist Minggao Shen. He said it could help CIC earn a more stable profit and reduce Beijing's exposure to U.S. and European government bonds amid volatile markets.
Some Chinese commentators have called for Beijing to reduce its exposure to the financial woes of Western governments by buying fewer bonds. China is Washington's biggest foreign bondholder, with $1.15 trillion in Treasury debt as of September.
"There is a general thought that maybe China should not invest in U.S. Treasurys or European sovereign bonds. Instead, why can't we hold direct assets in the economy?" Shen said.
By investing in individual projects, he said, "you don't have to depend on government guarantees and it should be affected less by the sovereign debt crisis."
CIC faced criticism over the performance of investments made just as the financial crisis was developing. But its results have improved and the fund reported an 11.7 percent return on assets last year.
Lou stressed that CIC is a commercial investor and wants to make a profit.
"CIC believes that such an investment, guided by commercial principles, offers the chance of a win-win solution for all," he wrote.
Lou gave no indication in which other countries the CIC might invest but cited an estimate that the United States needs to spend at least $2.2 trillion in infrastructure repairs or rebuilding.
"Free of the inflationary pressure that afflicts many emerging economies, the U.S. and Europe should make substantial investment," he said. "We cannot count on developing countries to deliver a stable economic recovery on their own."

Kindle DX Gets Temporary Price Cut ? But How Long Can This Jumbo E-Reader Last?
Amazon's extra-large Kindle DX is available this weekend (which is to say for the next few hours) for the low, low price of $259, down from its normal $379. It's telling that even the lowered price still seems ridiculously high, considering that smaller but more advanced models are selling for under $100. How long can this outlier live in a world dominated by cheap, pocketable, touchscreen e-readers? In its current form, the fact is it's likely on its way out. The Kindle Keyboard and indeed the graphite look in general are on their way out, to be replaced by the lighter, thinner, more touchable new generation. But there's a problem: the DX is one of the very few e-readers that doesn't use the same 6" E-Ink screen as everyone else. Fitch cuts Portugal rating on high debts, worse outlook (Reuters)
LISBON (Reuters) ? Fitch downgraded Portugal's credit rating to junk status on Thursday, citing large fiscal imbalances, high debts and the risks to its EU-mandated austerity program from a worsening economic outlook.
The ratings agency cut Portugal to BB+ from BBB-, which is still one notch higher than Moody's rating of Ba2. S&P still rates Portugal investment grade.
Fitch said a deepening recession makes it "much more challenging" for the government to cut the budget deficit but it still expects fiscal goals to be met both this year and next.
"However, the risk of slippage - either from worse macroeconomic outturns or insufficient expenditure controls - is large," Fitch said.
The challenging economic environment was clear in a Reuters poll on Thursday, where economists forecast Portugal's economy will contract by 2.9 percent next year, the deepest recession since the 1970s, and 1.6 percent this year, in line with the government's estimates.
Portugal's 10-year bond prices plunged, sending yields surging more than 100 basis points to 13.85 percent -- the second highest level in the euro zone after Greece. The spread to German Bunds also rose more than 100 basis points to 1,168.
The downgrade of Portugal came after the dramatic deterioration of the euro zone crisis in recent weeks as it spread to bigger countries like Italy and Spain.
"The worsening regional outlook helped inform the downgrade (of Portugal)," Rabobank said in an analyst note. "This, in turn, underlines the mounting risk of systemic downgrades."
Portugal sought a 78-billion-euro bailout from the European Union and IMF earlier this year and has adopted sweeping austerity measures to bring public accounts under controls.
Under the loan program Portugal must cut the budget deficit to 5.9 percent of gross domestic product this year from around 10 percent in 2010. Next year it must cut the deficit further to 4.5 percent.
STATE COMPANIES A RISK
Fitch said the state-owned "enterprise sector is another key source of fiscal risk" and has caused a number of upward revisions to the country's debt and budget deficit figures this year. The government has said there was an unexpected fiscal shortfall of about 3 billion euros this year.
"Given these downside risks, Fitch sees a significant likelihood that further consolidation measures will be needed through the course of 2012," Fitch said.
It sees Portugal total debt peaking at 116 percent of GDP in 2013 from 93.3 percent at the end of last year.
Filipe Garcia, an economist at Informacao de Mercados Financeiros, said that while the downgrade does not change the government's financing conditions as it is under a bailout, it could worsen the situation for companies.
"Where (the downgrade) has an impact is on companies, such as banks and other issuers like EDP or Brisa, whose ratings are greatly influenced by the sovereign rating, leaving them in a more difficult situation," said Garcia.
The agency said Portugal's debt crisis poses big risks for the country's banks. "Recapitalisation and increased emergency liquidity provision from the ECB to Portugal's banks will, in Fitch's view, be needed and provided," it said.
Under Portugal's bailout, 12 billion euros has been set aside for funding banks if necessary.
Fitch said a worsening fiscal or economic situation could lead to further downgrades. "Furthermore, although Portugal is funded to end-2013, sovereign liquidity risk may increase materially toward the end of the program if adverse market conditions persist," Fitch said.
The government hopes to return raising debt in financial markets at the end of 2013.

LONDON (AP) ? A London court has released Russian businessman and Portsmouth Football Club owner Vladimir Antonov on bail following his arrest in connection with a massive money-laundering probe in Lithuania.
Antonov, 36, was detained Thursday on a European arrest warrant issued by investigators probing alleged fraud and money laundering at his banks in two Baltic states. He was arrested along with his Lithuanian partner Raimondas Baranauskas, 53.
Both said they did not consent to being extradited to Lithuania in an appearance Friday at Westminster Magistrates Court. Both were released on conditional bail.
Antonov was ordered to pay 75,000 pounds ($116,000), surrender his passport, and live and sleep at his London home. He must report to police three days a week.

VILNIUS, Lithuania (AP) ? A Russian businessman who owns Portsmouth Football Club and has tried to invest in cash-strapped car maker Saab has been arrested in London in connection with a money laundering probe that has rocked Lithuania and Latvia, officials said Friday.
Vladimir Antonov, 36, and a Lithuanian partner, Raimondas Baranauskas, 53, were detained Thursday on an arrest warrant issued by investigators probing alleged fraud and money laundering at his banks in the Baltic states, Lithuanian prosecutor Tomas Krusna told reporters.
The Bank of Lithuania said late Thursday that his bank there, Snoras Bank, will be liquidated, calling it the best solution for country's financial system and economy, which were jolted after the bank was nationalized and its operations halted.
Lithuanian regulators claim that hundreds of millions of euros were siphoned from Snoras, the country's fifth-largest financial institution, while Latvian authorities have said that similar asset-stripping took place on a massive scale at Latvija Krajbanka, a subsidiary bank controlled by Snoras.
Lithuanian bank chief Vitas Vasiliauskas said the government was liquidating the bank rather than waste taxpayers' money trying to help "a plane that won't fly."
"There is no other way to solve this situation," he said.
The decision to liquidate Snoras means that Latvijas Krajbanka, which Snoras controls through a 68 percent stake, is almost certain to suffer the same fate given Latvia's meager financial resources as it emerges from one of the world's worst recessions.
When asked about Antonov's arrest, London police read a statement saying that two men ? age 36 and 53 ? were arrested in response to a Europe-wide arrest warrant in London's financial center. British officials do not name suspects until they have been charged.
Police said the two men remained in custody overnight and are due to appear in a London court later Friday.
Lithuanian prosecutors on Wednesday issued the warrant for Antonov, who owned over 60 percent of Snoras, and Baranauskas.
Antonov told the Lithuanian daily Respublika in a phone interview published Thursday that he feared for his life.
"I returned to London because I live and work here ? my family is here. Where else can I go? Russia? That would be a one-way ticket. I would have to stay there for safety, but this would be considered an escape attempt," he said.
"I am ready to testify...I understand that extradition is inevitable. I can say it openly ? I am scared that I may get killed," Antonov said.
Latvian officials had hoped that Lithuania's government might be able to salvage the banks, and Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis was due to travel to Lithuania on Friday on discuss the issue. However, once news of Snoras' liquidation broke, Dombrovskis canceled the trip.
Lithuania's Finance Ministry said Friday that they would pay out all guaranteed deposits ? up to euro100,000 ($132,000) ? at Snoras by Christmas ? requiring some 4 billion litas ($1.5 billion) in funds.
Latvia's government was due to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the fate of Latvijas Krajbanka.
Authorities in both Lithuania and Latvia say the two banks' collapse does not pose a systemic risk since they are mid-sized and the two states have ample reserves to guarantee deposits.
Latvijas Krajbanka was Latvia's 10th largest bank by assets after it was taken over by regulators on Monday.
Janis Brazovskis, an official with Latvia's Finance and Capital Markets Commission who was appointed to oversee Krajbanka, said Wednesday that Antonov's failed attempt to acquire the troubled Swedish automaker Saab might have triggered the Baltic banks' downfall.
He said that approximately 100 million lats ($200 million) were siphoned from the bank to increase its charter capital and finance Antonov's investment projects ? including the unsuccessful takeover of Saab.
Deposit holders in both countries are now forced to wait in long lines to withdraw money from cash machines, while companies and municipalities have seen the working capital virtually disappear.
Baranauskas, who owned just over 25 percent in Snoras, said last week that Lithuania's decision to nationalize Snoras was "robbery" and an attack on Antonov.
