Severe NFL injuries rose every season from 2009-12

Sure didn't take long for some significant injuries at NFL training camps ? Philadelphia Eagles receiver Jeremy Maclin, Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta, Denver Broncos center Dan Koppen, to name only three.

Immediately, some theories developed: Too much offseason work. Not enough. New labor-contract rules limiting padded practices to one per day, while generally seen as helpful, are hardly a cure-all.

Washington Redskins linebacker London Fletcher thinks some guys get hurt in camp because players are trying so hard to impress coaches and earn a roster spot or a starting job.

"You know now coaches are really evaluating you," said Fletcher, whose teammate, second-year linebacker Keenan Robinson, tore his left pectoral muscle on Day 1 of training camp. "You've got guys with a competitive spirit and they're looking at it, like, 'My job's on the line. I need to make a play' and not realizing there's going to be times to show that coaches that you can hit, you can make plays in preseason games, but you don't want to have a guy go down because of something that happened in practice."

Whatever the cause, severe injuries are increasing in the NFL lately. The number of injuries that forced a player to miss at least eight days jumped every year from 2009 to 2012, according to an analysis of NFL injury data released Wednesday. The study by Edgeworth Economics, based on information collected by the league, also shows that players with concussions missed an average of 16 days last season, up from only four days in 2005, while the length of time out for other types of injuries has been steadier.

"Severe injuries are increasing in frequency," Jesse David, the economist overseeing the study, said in a telephone interview from Pasadena, Calif. "I know that's a very important issue for both the players' association and the league ? trying to tweak the rules and the equipment to deal with that. But despite everything they've been doing, it's still going on."

David said his company has done consulting for the NFL Players Association in the past and received the data for this study from the union, but wasn't paid by it.

The study says there were 1,095 instances of injuries sidelining a player for eight or more days in 2009 ? including practices and games in the preseason, regular season and postseason ? and that climbed to 1,272 in 2010, 1,380 in 2011, and 1,496 in 2012. That's an increase of 37 percent.

"The way I look at it, really, is that injuries are part of the game," said cornerback Kyle Wilson of the New York Jets, who lost another cornerback, Aaron Berry, for the season when he tore a knee ligament on the first day of practice last week.

"Injuries happen sometimes. They're unfortunate, but it really is just part of the game."

Concussions have become a far-more-noticed part of football in recent years, with more discussion of the links between head injuries and brain disease, hundreds of lawsuits brought by thousands of former players, and rules changes made by the NFL to try to better protect players.

During the nine years examined in David's study, the average number of days missed because of head injuries by players in the league went from 4.8 in 2004, four in 2005, and 4.1 in 2006, to 10.9 in 2010, 12 in 2011, and 16 last season.

"We have experts at practice every day to let you know, as a coach, if someone does have a concussion, so that makes it pretty easy. They leave it out of our hands; they put in the experts' hands," Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said. "But, yeah, I think there's more awareness in a lot of different areas when it comes to injuries over the last few years, and rightfully so."

David said "you now have more severe injuries overall" because of the hike in lengthy absences for reported concussions.

"Are the brain injuries actually more severe now than they were five years ago? Or is that players simply being held out longer for the same injury? That we can't tell from the data," David said. "My guess is it's both, but how much of each factor, I don't know."

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, who said the league will look at the study's findings, attributed the longer absences for players with concussions to more caution in the treatment of those types of injuries.

"We do know that the game is safer now, but we still have work to do. We continue to work hard on many fronts to make the game better and safer for our sport at all levels," McCarthy wrote in an email. "Our ongoing efforts include making rule changes designed to take dangerous techniques out of the game and also improving medical care to properly manage and treat concussions and raise awareness of their seriousness."

Canada is the new Cyprus

Published: July 31, 2013 11:00 AM
Updated: July 31, 2013 11:45 AM

Dear editor,

Remember how horrified we were when we heard that Cyprus banks were allowed to take private deposits to bail out the banks?

This was called a ?bail in.?

Well, on June 10 when Harper?s latest omnibus budget bill passed, Canada became the new Cyprus.

Carefully buried on pages 144-145 of the budget bill, banks are allowed to rapidly convert certain bank liabilities (your deposits) into regulatory capital.

So thanks to Conservative legislation, your insured deposits, GICs, retirement savings plan, education funds for grandchildren can all be scooped up by your bank if it fails.

This is now the law of the land.? Only Parliament can change the law.

This Canadian government ?bail in? legislation says nothing about guaranteeing protection for depositors. This means that government doesn?t have to bail out banks as it did, saving taxpayers a bundle.

Wait a minute, aren?t bank depositors taxpayers?

Boy, I?m sure glad I don?t live on Cyprus.

Courtenay

Daughter's cancer diagnosis compels mother to complete triathlon

Triathlon success for mother

A MOTHER who staged her own triathlon to raise money for a cancer charity has raised just over ?3,000 from her venture.

Jill Harker, from Northallerton, spent her 59th birthday on Saturday, July 27, swimming, cycling and running to raise money for a cancer charity.

Mrs Harker?s daughter, Wendy, was diagnosed with a tumour in her eye, so she set herself her athletics challenge to raise funds for the Eye Tumour Research Fund.

She covered the equivalent of a half marathon - swimming just over three miles in Richmond Swimming Pool, then cycling five miles and running five miles.

Mrs Harker, who worked as a teaching assistant at Romanby Primary School for 18 years, until retiring this summer, said: ?I have no plans to do any more triathlons at this moment, but I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who supported me.?

Letter from USC President about recent resignation of USC ...

For those of you that don?t know, Jessica Tong, the USC?s coordinator for the Sexual Health and Consent Education Service has resigned with an open letter (http://iksusc.tumblr.com/).? I guess you could say this is our first public hurdle for my team and I, and I?d like to think we?ve a learnt a lot and gained some new perspective about the USC.? These are some of the lessons we?ve learned and some of the goals we are continuing to work towards.

Firstly, I want to categorically assure you that the USC is committed to social justice; it is at the core of the student government and everything we do.? We are committed to supporting survivors of sexual violence and educating our peers about consent.

I also want to commend the work of two very strong and dedicated advocates for survivors of sexual assault, Jessica Tong and Sam Krishnapillai.? Ms. Tong stood up for what she believed in, and by resigning she has sparked constructive discussion about the mission and goals of Peer Support Network (PSN) and the I Know Someone campaign.? She has every right to share her opinions about her experience.? The USC?s Vice-President Internal, Sam, is one of the hardest working and dedicated people I get the pleasure of working with.? She has been striving to ensure the PSN is working as effectively to serve students as possible.? The events in the past day are, however, not about these two individuals, in my opinion, they are symptoms of some greater challenges for the USC.

One of these larger issues is how we handle volunteers.? Ms. Tong left the organization frustrated: this means we didn?t provide her with the meaningful experience she deserved.? We?ve inadvertently done it before, but as a student government we are committed to bettering all volunteer experiences.? We are building better training and personal development programs, better communications tools, and better institutional supports: projects like access to the Human Resources Office and better workspaces where our commissioners, coordinators and interns can collaborate and work together to better our services.? This is something that will take time, but we are dedicating a lot of the government?s resources into developing this program.? Keep watching the USC; it will soon be the best place to learn outside of the classroom through meaningful volunteer experiences.

The other issue that I think we need to discuss is determining the goals of the Peer Support Network.? I think there is a real disconnect between what the elected councilors, who set the direction of council, want and what it is perceived to provide. I think there aren?t enough of our students who access the services that can provide great resources for them. From the perspective of the USC (according to our direction from council) the Peer Support Network aims to be a well-known source of education and support for students from all walks of life, while remaining a place of refuge and community for specific groups.

As a campus, we need to start thinking about what is the responsibility of the student government.? Which services we can offer ourselves through peer support and which services should we be advocating the university or external governments to provide?? We need to acknowledge that we aren?t experts, as executives and coordinators; we can only do so much alone.? How can we better integrate our existing external partners as advisors to what we do?

We?ve been talking to councilors and service coordinators about this, and we are starting to do what we do best: make a plan to make a plan (that?s my attempt at humour).? We?re going to be using some of our new feedback tools, like an online Idea Forum and the upcoming engagement policy (bottom paragraph: http://www.westerngazette.ca/2013/07/17/summer-council-roundup-amending-the-budget-tracking-turf-and-engaging-students/) in order to gauge what the broader student body would like to see.

We will continue to work very hard to solve some of these larger problems, but we need your input, your patience and your support in order to accomplish these goals.

We want to try something new to answer questions you might have about the recent events.? Since everyone is away for the summer, we wanted to try and have online town-hall style discussion.? Sam and I will be available to answer any of your questions and discuss your ideas this Thursday from 1PM to 3PM at westernusc.ca/townhall.? People have been wondering what we can do to improve the USC, and we think the first step is to open the channels of communication.? I sincerely need your help in understanding fully what you want to see from the Sexual Health and Consent Education Service.? I look forward to talking soon!

Finally, I want to say that Sam, Amir and I ran on the principle of listening: engaging with students about changes to services, listening to the ideas they have to make Western even better.? My executive and the whole USC still stand behind that goal, and we are working every day to make it easier for you to tell us what you need.

The USC remains entirely committed to operating the Sexual Health and Consent Education Service and the I Know Someone campaign once a new coordinator has been hired.

Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions or concerns.

?

Architizer Relaunches To Connect Architects With Other Architects, And Brands, And Clients Too!

Screen Shot 2013-07-28 at 3.26.43 PMFor 100 years or more, architects have relied on a massive catalog sitting on their desk to find the right products to use in their architectural project — this brand of glass, or that brand of toilet. That catalog had a monopoly on the market for a century, but with the birth of the internet, that catalog never made the transition over to digital. But a site that launched back in 2009 as a platform for architects to publish their work, Architizer, is relaunching tomorrow to finally fill that void.

Differences small between student loan bills

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House is set to go along with a bipartisan Senate compromise that would link college students' interest rates to the financial markets and offer borrowers lower rates this fall.

The Senate bill hews closely to one the House already has passed, and leaders from both parties and in both chambers expect those differences won't stand in the way of quick resolution, perhaps as early as Wednesday.

House approval would send the measure to President Barack Obama, who has said he would sign it into law "right away."

But critics note that if the economy improves, as expected, rates could climb higher.

If the Republican-led House consents to the Senate's tinkering with the House's earlier proposal, and Obama signs the legislation before students start returning to campus, families would see better deals on some federal loans this year than they did in 2012. Undergraduates could borrow at rates as low as 3.4 percent for subsidized Stafford loans and 6.8 percent on unsubsidized Stafford loans last year, while graduate students and parents borrowed at 7.9 percent last year.

Those 3.4 percent rates doubled on July 1 because Congress did not act. Lawmakers from both parties said the rate increase was unacceptable and worked on various proposals to extend rates, overhaul rates and even remake the entire program before classes start this fall.

Both chambers would link the interest rate to the 10-year Treasury note plus an added percentage, based on the type of loan. Each sets caps on how high the loans can go.

But under the Senate bill, once a student or parent takes a loan for the school year the rate would not change. The House bill would make the interest rate variable, meaning it could change every year until the loan is repaid.

A look at what the House and Senate bills would mean for students and their parents:

UNDERGRADUATES:

Senate: Undergraduates who take subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans would pay the 10-year Treasury note, plus an additional 2.05 percent. That would put the interest rate at about 3.9 percent this fall. Rates would be capped at 8.25 percent.

House: Under the House bill, undergraduates who take subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans would pay the 10-year Treasury note, plus an additional 2.5 percent. That would translate to an interest rate of about 4.3 percent interest rates for loans taken this fall. Rates would be capped at 8.5 percent.

GRADUATE STUDENTS:

Senate: Graduate students would borrow at the interest rate of the 10-year Treasury notes plus an additional 3.6 percent. That would bring 5.4 percent interest rates for borrowers this fall. Rates would be capped at 9.5 percent.

House: Graduate students and parents would borrow at the 10-year Treasury note plus an additional 4.5 percent. Under this formula, graduate student loans this fall would carry a 6.3 percent interest rate. Rates would be capped at 10.5 percent.

PARENTS AND SOME GRADUATE STUDENTS:

Senate: Parents and some graduate students would borrow at the 10-year Treasury note plus an additional 4.6 percent. That works out to a 6.4 percent interest rate for fall term. Rates would be capped at 10.5 percent.

House: Graduate students and parents would borrow at the 10-year Treasury note plus an additional 4.5 percent. That would bring about 6.3 percent interest rates for borrowers this fall. Rates would be capped at 10.5 percent

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says his next Fed chairman should take ordinary people into account when setting monetary policy.

Obama tells The New York Times in an interview on the paper's website Saturday that he wants someone who won't just work abstractly to keep inflation in check and maintain stability in the markets. He says he wants the next Fed chairman to also promote policies that will help make ordinary people's lives better.

The president began a series of speeches this week promoting ideas for easing the burdens on the middle class.

Obama is considering replacements for Ben Bernanke, whose term as Fed chairman expires early next year.

Former Obama economic adviser Larry Summers and Janet Yellen, the Fed's current vice chair, are among the leading candidates for the job.

A senior White House official told The Associated Press on Friday that Obama was not expected to announce a replacement for Bernanke before the fall. The official was not authorized to speak by name about internal White House deliberations over personnel decisions.

Chris Christie-Rand Paul tiff on foreign policy reflects deep rift in GOP

In Congress, the divide between Team Christie and a more libertarian Team Paul was on display in the debate over the Amash amendment that sought to de-fund the NSA surveillance program.

The foreign policy tussle between Chris Christie and Rand Paul, two likely 2016 Republican presidential contenders, marks the most public flaring of a long-simmering debate between the GOP?s long-time hawkish bent and the libertarian infusion the party has experienced in the last two election cycles.

When push comes to shove, do Republicans weigh in on the side of national security and foreign intervention or of privacy and greater international detachment? And which path will help grow a political party that even some of its leaders fear faces deep demographic challenges?

Of course, both Senator Paul (R) of Kentucky and New Jersey Governor Christie would argue their path does all those things ? they just strongly disagree about how to proceed.

?This strain of libertarianism that?s going through parties right now and making big headlines I think is a very dangerous thought,? Christie said on a panel in Aspen, Colo. on Thursday, according to the New York Times.

Later, he continued: ?The next attack that comes, that kills thousands of Americans as a result, people are going to be looking back on the people having this intellectual debate and wondering whether they put ?? before abruptly ending his thought.

In a Facebook post, Paul, who most famously launched an hours-long filibuster over domestic US drone use and who has pushed to cut off foreign aid to many restive Middle East nations, rejoined that ?Chris Christie thinks freedom is dangerous. What's dangerous is a foreign policy that borrows from China to pay people who burn our flag in Egypt.?

Paul?s political Facebook page was less restrained, calling Christie ?Obama?s favorite Republican? and wondering if the governor approves of sending weapons to ?al Qaeda allies? in Syria.

While the tiff is a spot of positioning between two presidential contenders at either end of a particular policy debate, it?s also an argument that reverberates deep down into the Republican Party.

In Congress, there?s a stark divide between Team Christie and Team Paul.

Rep. Peter King (R) of New York, a former chairman of the Homeland Security Committee and a veteran foreign policy hawk, said he ?isn?t saying no? to a potential presidential run in part because ?when I see people like Rand Paul talking about drones killing people out to get a cup of coffee, I don't want that to be the face of the national Republican Party," he told The Hill.

But the reason Congressman King, a 20-year House veteran, has found himself back in the congressional majority is because of a surge of more Paul-minded reinforcements like Rep. Raul Labrador (R) of Idaho. And those folks want more Rand, not less.

Unilever to ditch PwC after 26 years to comply with new UK auditor rule

By Huw Jones

LONDON (Reuters) - Unilever is looking for a new auditor, after 26 years with PwC, to comply with a new rule, prompted by questions over why accountants gave banks a clean bill of health just weeks before they were rescued by taxpayers in the 2008 financial crisis.

Britain's Financial Reporting Council (FRC) said last year that companies should consider changing their auditor at least every decade in order to end cozy long-term relationships.

Only a few blue-chip companies have taken any action so far.

HSBC , a KPMG client since 1991, has said it will put the work out to tender - the only bank to do so.

Barclays has yet to consider a tender, having used PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) for the past century, Royal Bank of Scotland has been with Deloitte since 2000, and PwC has audited Lloyds' books for about 140 years.

Asset manager Schroders has just retendered but had to stay with PwC after discovering that appointing KPMG would breach conflict of interest rules. KPMG has also just replaced Deloitte as auditor for insurer RSA .

Change is costly and time-consuming and used to occur only because of disagreements between auditor and client.

A UK Competition Commission investigation found that almost a third of top 100 companies have had the same auditor for more than two decades. The "Big Four" - PwC, KPMG, Deloitte and Ernst & Young - audit most of the top firms.

"To maintain Unilever's position at the forefront of good governance, we have decided to put our statutory audit work out to tender with the intention of nominating a new external auditor for 2014," Unilever Chief Financial Officer Jean-Marc Hu?t said in a statement.

Melanie McLaren, the FRC's executive director for codes and standards, said the rule was beginning to prove itself and will urge the Competition Commission to hold off for the time being.

But the Competition Commission proposed on Monday that top companies should put their book-keeping work out to tender every five years, a significant hardening of the FRC initiative.

And the European Union is approving a draft law that is likely to go further and force an actual change in auditor.

Another criticism is that some companies are so big that tendering will see the Big Four swapping customers rather than giving smaller auditors a chance to have a piece of the pie.

Finding justice

A Christian Science perspective: Even in the most unjust of circumstances, justice can be found.

By Kwadjo Boaitey / July 25, 2013

People have to deal with some form of injustice every day. For instance, someone cut you off while you were driving to work this morning, or you were accused of doing something you didn?t do, or you discover someone you trust has been lying to you, or someone discriminates against you because of the amount of money you make or the color of your skin.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Opinions vary on what is just and what isn?t as well as on the remedy for obtaining justice. My concept of justice evolved drastically after a significant physical healing I had through spiritual means.

One day nearly 14 years ago, I found myself gravely ill (see Christian Science Sentinel, April 13, 2009). The illness was so sudden and the symptoms so aggressive, I was literally scared to death. I remember lying in bed going over my life looking for something, an act, a transgression ? something I committed that would shed light on what was happening to me. It was like a film reel. As the images spun in my thought, I got a message that I know came from God, which said to me that searching my past in that way was absurd. That message assured me that God was with me and was speaking to me, and that He would continue to care for me. It was then that I elected to have the illness addressed through Christian Science.

For the next three months I read from the Bible and ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? by Mary Baker Eddy. I read to learn more about me, God?s creation, and my spiritual identity as a child of God. I began prayerfully protesting daily the legitimacy of this ailment. It didn?t come from God, so it had no authority over me, as one made in His image and likeness. It was my right to find healing from this ailment, and I did. When I was healed, my concept of justice changed.

Justice to me had always meant equality, decency, and fairness reflected in laws such as the civil rights act, the voting rights act, the right to a fair trial, etc. However, with this healing I discovered that justice is actually the result of God?s law, the law of divine Love, which blesses and heals. When I became clear that the ailment I was dealing with was not created by God or supported by His law of infinite good, I was healed.?

The Bible shares countless examples of individuals and nations who through their reliance on God found just solutions to problems. Moses led the children of Israel out of bondage, enslavement, from Egypt. After Moses led the people through the Red Sea to land, to freedom, they began to rebel because they were hungry and thirsty. Although the Bible doesn?t record them using these words, I can hear them saying, ?Where?s the justice in this?? But God provided for them with bread and meat and fertile lands, and continued to provide for them. When they relied on God to fulfill their needs, their eyes were open to what He was already supplying.?

And how about Daniel, tossed into a den of lions for praying to his God? The Bible records Daniel as saying, after the king discovers him alive and untouched, ?My God hath sent his angel, and hath shut the lions? mouths, that they have not hurt me: forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me? (Daniel 6:22).

Daniel and Moses learned something about their innate goodness and its power which is of God. I believe they caught glimpses of their spirituality, which could never be marred or diminished, and they demonstrated this understanding of themselves in the most unjust of circumstances, and found deliverance.

Centuries later, Christ Jesus, who heightened humanity's understanding of God, was crucified for healing and teaching. He healed people from unjust "sentences" such as blindness, leprosy, dementia or insanity, palsy, adultery, lack. He taught his followers that the kingdom of heaven is within and that justice can always be found through faith in and an understanding of God, divine Love.

Science and Health states, ?It is man?s moral right to annul an unjust sentence, a sentence never inflicted by divine authority? (p. 381). This sentence could be an illness, a hostile housing environment, racism, prejudice, abuse, or even violence. But no matter what it is, we have the right, power, and capability to annul it through God, and that, to me, is justice.

Ethics committee extends investigation of Roskam

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House Ethics Committee says it is extending an investigation of Republican Rep. Peter Roskam of Illinois.

The committee says it received a report from the Office of Congressional Ethics, an independent investigative body, and has decided to extend its investigation of Roskam. The committee says it will announce its course of action on Roskam in September and says extending an investigation does not indicate that a violation has occurred.

The committee did not indicate what the OCE report included or what was investigated.

Egypt army chief calls for mass rallies in support of new regime

Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi delivers a speech in Cairo on Wednesday.

By Ayman Mohyeldin and Charlene Gubash, NBC News

CAIRO ? The army chief who led the ouster of President Mohammed Morsi on Wednesday called for Egyptians to stage mass rallies later this week in support of the interim military-backed regime.

In a speech Wednesday, Gen. Abdel Fatah el-Sissi called on supporters to fill public squares across the country on Friday in support of a campaign by the army and police against "violence" and "terrorism."

His comments were a reference to the deadly clashes between opponents and supporters of Morsi, which have left dozens dead, and to a surge in suspected Islamic militancy in the Sinai Peninsula.

Hussein Malla / AP

Days of massive protests and a military ultimatum forced the country's first democratically elected president from office.

"I am asking the Egyptians next Friday, all of you come down. Why? To delegate me to face the violence and terrorism," he said in his speech at a graduation ceremony for naval and air defense forces.

"If violence is used, the army will fulfill whatever measures to combat violence and terrorism."

His comments came hours after two people were killed in Cairo when pro-Morsi demonstrators marched from a neighborhood to the location of the sit-in where protesters have been camped out since the president?s July 3 ouster.

Meanwhile, Egypt?s ministry of health said 19 people were injured when a bomb ? possibly a hand grenade ? was thrown at a police station in the city of Mansoura, capital of Dakhalia province.

The ministry said civilians were among the injured but it did not give a breakdown.

El-Sissi?s call was almost immediately condemned by a senior member of Morsi?s Muslim Brotherhood, Reuters reported.

?Your threat will not stop the millions from continuing to gather,? Essam El-Erian wrote on his Facebook page on Wednesday, calling el-Sissi ?a coup leader who kills women, children and those at prayer.??

98% Before Midnight

All Critics (159) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (156) | Rotten (3)

Hawke and Delpy remain as charming as ever, and their combined goofiness is more endearing than annoying.

Love is messy here, life cannot be controlled, satisfaction is far from guaranteed. Romance is rocky at best. But romance still is.

Though "Before Midnight" is often uncomfortable to watch, it's never less than mesmerizing - and ultimately, a joy to walk with this prickly but fascinating couple again.

"Before Midnight" is heartbreaking, but not because of Jesse and Celine. It's the filmmakers' passions that seem to have cooled.

Before Midnight is fascinating to watch, and so long as Celine and Jesse are communicating, there's still hope.

How (Jesse and Celine) try to rekindle that flame is what drives Midnight, a film that feels so authentic it's like overhearing a conversation you're not sure you should be hearing.

The reason this film will hold your attention for two hours is because of the natural dialogue between Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.

Before Midnight is like an old friend who has grown sharper and grumpier and saltier with life; and for students of cinema, the film is a masterclass in the use of the language and tools of this amazing artform to portray human nature

The beauty of this film - like the two before - is its natural flow of conversation and ability to engage and transport us into the moment

The release of each sequel is becoming an event, so it's particularly great to see Before Midnight not only meeting expectations but raising the bar.

It's a brave, challenging and essential installment in what is one of modern cinema's finest trilogies.

The beauty of this film - like the two before - is its natural flow of conversation and ability to engage and transport us into the moment

Before Midnight is no romance. It's a horror movie.

Takes its traditional romantic tale into more insightful territories.

Hawk and Delpy know just how to get under your skin. Their onscreen alter egos fit like a glove, and witnessing their ageing, nagging, toying love is a true privilege.

What lifts Linklater's trilogy above your average dialogue-heavy indie is not just the intelligence of the conversation but its frankness and humor.

There's not a hint of melodrama or falsity in the Before series.

The 'Before' trilogy is a vacation for me. I am taken away, and it is never for long enough. I genuinely feel lucky to have these movies.

I'm not sure this is the end of Richard Linklater's 'Before' trilogy. It's perfection just as it is, but then again, Linklater has nine more years to work on the sequel.

Loving words mix with personal attacks, the magic moments with the unintended slights, as we witness the occasional desperation of imperfect people doing the best they can when life moves beyond meet-cute and courtship. That's authentic.

Linklater and his players bring an end to the fantasy and welcome the thrilling ups and bitter downs of reality to this love story.

Like the first two films, it reflects the real world in a way that seems almost preternatural. It's just that, here, the real world is a harsher, more disappointing place.

The duo, clearly so comfortable in their characters' skin, indulge in intelligent banter, sharp humour and emotional truths.

So much better written than contemporary novels, this film is a literary as well as cinematic achievement to cherish. For grown-ups.

As before, it's often very funny, with Jesse and Celine swapping Woody Allen-esque one-liners - nicely snarky, appealingly abrasive.

The acting, the dialogue and direction are superb.

Epilepsy drugs in pregnancy tied to kid's delays

    By Kerry Grens

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Women with epilepsy who take anti-seizure medication while they are pregnant are more likely to later report delays in their child's development and autism symptoms, according to a new study from Norway.

The findings probably won't change the conversation too much between women and their doctors in terms of managing epilepsy during pregnancy, because it's already understood that the medications carry some risks, said Dr. Lewis Holmes, director of the Antiepilepsy Drug Registry at Massachusetts General Hospital, who was not involved in the research.

However, studies like this are badly needed, he added, because women are often asking about risks to their children's development, and "it hasn't really been mapped out."

The researchers could not prove that the anti-epileptic drugs are to blame, but the findings add to other evidence linking the medications to effects on children's development.

Seizure medication taken during pregnancy is already tied to a higher risk of physical malformations in the baby, and the drugs are linked with a greater chance of complications during pregnancy and childbirth (see Reuters Health story of June 14, 2011 here:).

One study from Denmark earlier this year also found that women who took the epilepsy drug valproate during pregnancy were three times more likely to have a child with an autism spectrum disorder.

"The risk of other effects on fetal development, that is, development and behavior, is less clear," said Dr. Gyri Veiby, lead author of the new study and a researcher at the University of Bergen in Norway.

She said that among all pregnancies, about three to five women out of every 1,000 use anti-epileptic drugs during pregnancy.

"It is reasonable to assume that most (anti-epileptic drugs) have the potential to harm the developing fetus. On the other hand, seizures should also be avoided during pregnancy," Veiby wrote in an email to Reuters Health.

"In order to assess whether antiepileptic drug treatment during pregnancy is justified, we need to know as much as possible about the potential risks for the fetus," she said.

Veiby and her colleagues examined data from a large survey of mothers across Norway.

More than 108,000 women filled out a questionnaire asking about the behavior and development of their children at 18 and 36 months of age.

The survey included questions about social, physical and verbal skills, mannerisms, aggression and other traits.

Among the women in the study, 634 had epilepsy and 333 of them took epilepsy medication while they were pregnant - that translated to about 46 percent of the children of epileptic mothers having been exposed to one or more of the medications.

Children whose mothers took epilepsy drugs while pregnant were more likely to score outside the normal range on several developmental measurements, the researchers report in the journal Epilepsia.

For instance, 3.3 percent of three-year-olds whose mothers did not have epilepsy did not meet milestones for physical skills, whereas 7.5 percent of kids exposed to epilepsy drugs in utero failed to meet these milestones.

In addition, 4.8 percent of three-year-olds whose mothers did not have epilepsy scored abnormally on their ability to form sentences, while 11.2 percent of the children whose mothers took anti-seizure medication were delayed in their sentence skills.

The kids whose mothers took epilepsy medication while pregnant were also more likely to have autistic traits - 6 percent - compared to just 1.8 percent of the kids who mothers did not have epilepsy.

A mother's epilepsy itself did not appear to contribute to the heightened risk. Mothers with the condition who did not take any medication were no more likely to have a child with delays than mothers without epilepsy.

Dr. Cynthia Harden, a neurology professor at Hofstra-North Shore LIJ School of Medicine in Hempstead, New York, said it's possible the findings could be explained in part by something called "selection bias."

Mothers who take epilepsy medication while pregnant, for example, might be more concerned and therefore looking out for developmental delays, so they could be more likely to report them.

But Harden also said it's possible the drugs themselves have a negative effect on babies' development.

"There might be something real going on here, but it's possible that the magnitude of the effect is exaggerated by selection bias," said Harden, who is also the director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center at North Shore-LIJ Medical Group in Great Neck, NY.

Holmes said the findings support parents taking action on cues that their child might have a delay.

"Because there are concerns about subtle effects, I think it's smart to go ahead and think about obtaining some formal testing...as a way of making sure that everything is OK before first grade," Holmes told Reuters Health.

Harden agreed that the study doesn't change the discussion about epilepsy management during pregnancy too much.

Already, patients and physicians are aware of the potential hazards of the drugs, yet "seizures are dangerous, and we cannot permit our patients to have seizures during pregnancy," she said.

Physicians try to reduce the dose of the medication, trim back the treatment to one type of drug if possible, and avoid the use of valproate.

Veiby added that another way to minimize the risks during pregnancy is to plan ahead to figure out the safest treatment strategy, and to avoid unplanned pregnancies.

"Unfortunately, many women on (anti-epileptic drugs) do not receive the appropriate pre-pregnancy counseling," she said.

Essential Search Engine Optimization Tips For Website Owners ...

Optimizing your website only requires time and a little guidance. Here are some great tips to optimize your site.

Proper keyword density is essential to search engine optimization. Do not include more than 20 percent of keywords on your page.

Select a keyword specific domain name. You want people to be able to find your site easily. Ads do not give you all of your visitors; some visitors get to your site by looking for products that you might have.

Proper keyword density is essential to search engine optimization. Be sure not to overdo keyword usage. A good rule of thumb is to keep it under 20%.

When you link your site you need a viable anchor tag. You should avoid vague and generic text links like ?click here? because it is not helpful in increasing your search engine ranking. Crawling spiders will notice you if you use the correct keywords for anchor text.

When designing your website, it?s important to know that spiders cannot read dynamic language or session ID names. Incorporate a keyword into a naturally flowing URL for best results.

Increasing your PageRank depends upon increasing the amount of site traffic you have, as well as keeping visitors on your site for an extended period of time. There is evidence that the quantity of time spent on a site influences the ranking a site gets. Optimizing your search engine results is the best way to improve your online visibility. You can use discussion groups and forums to convince visitors to stay logged in to your site for a longer time.

Pay-per-click strategies can be great ways to practice affiliate marketing. This service is easy to provide, but the pay can be modest. Even with modest pay though, revenues can build quickly.

To expand your customer base and bring more traffic to your site, use a product feed to boost your presence online. Your feeds should include detailed descriptions of your product offerings or services, along with prices and pictures. Send these to the larger search engines and online consumer assistance websites. Customers will also be able to use a feed reader to subscribe to the feed.

Once you have decided on the keywords or key phrases that are most relevant to your website, use them in the title of your web page. Your title should be relevant, it will be the first impression that you leave with users who may or may not visit your site. This will help your site get clicked since it will fit searches better.

Use an accurate title tag to make sure that search engines will understand your page content. However, do not go past sixty characters, as most engines do not even bother displaying anything after that. They will also give text or terms coming after that point less weight.

AP Style is generally a much more effective tool than SEO style. To maximise the SEO style, repeat the important keywords as many times as you can without ruining the flow or quality of writing. As the search engines do their job by finding keywords and putting a value on their density, you will find your rankings improving.

    Site Map

Make a site map to help the search engines index your site?s pages. A site map is also known as the navigation bar. This part of your web site will let search engines know how many pages your web site has and what each one contains. When your site is not very large, you still want to have a site map to help raise your search engine rankings.

Include transcripts of any streaming media like audio or video on your site in order to help the search engines rank your content. When you have a transcript a search engine will pick that up too.

Choose a domain name that is key-word rich. Make your website simple to find when potential visitors are looking for it. Your website visitors will come from a variety of sources. It may be advertising or it may be from a random online search.

Take the time to become knowledgeable about strong and weak keywords. Before building your website, know which keywords should be included in the titles. By researching certain keywords, you will be able to find out exactly what people search for in your category. Mention these keywords often to increase your site traffic.

You need to go through your site for errors, some forget to do this. Take the time to look over your website and make sure that everything is legible and correct for your readers, and for the search engines. Make sure that you proofread all of your work, as a misspelled keyword is useless.

    Site Map

It is important to be patient while enduring the process of boosting your SEO. You will not see an immediate increase in traffic to your website. It may take several months, especially if you have a new website. Online business is no different from offline business. Either way, it is going to take time to build your brand.

Generate a keyword-oriented site map for added SEO optimization. A site map gives your viewers an easy way to locate what they need on your website, by listing all the areas of your site. Site maps are also useful indexing tools for search engines, as accessibility is a highly desirable trait.

Now that you are better informed from this article, you should see the revisions that need to be made on your own site. Make your website better by utilizing the information presented here.

Limo Fire: Estranged wife says driver was on phone

    By NBC Bay Area staff

The estranged wife of a California limo driver involved in a fiery accident that killed five women on the San Mateo Bridge over San Francisco Bay said her husband was talking to her on his cell phone and was distracted just minutes before the limo burst into flames on May 4.

Rachel Hernandez-Brown said she was arguing with her husband on the phone just minutes before the Bay Area bridge tragedy.

And she?s raising concerns that he was too distracted to react quickly when the limo burst into flames.

"I said, I started yelling, ?Oh my God, turn it down, turn the friggin music down!?"

Rachel Hernandez-Brown told NBC Bay Area that her husband, Orville Brown, even turned up the music as she argued with him on the phone so the women in the back of the limo couldn?t hear them fighting.

"He cussed, he was cussing me out and saying ?I can?t really talk because I have clients in the car and I can?t be unprofessional.?? Then that?s when I said, ?maybe you need to pay attention to the road and leave me alone and do your job.'"

What remains unclear is whether an argument slowed his response when one of the passengers started pounding on the closed partition.

A new bride and four of her friends died in the May 4 fire on the San Mateo Bridge. The cause of which is still under investigation.

    Four other women escaped.

Survivor Nelia Arellano told NBC?Bay Area in a May 6 interview that Brown was on the phone when the limo was filling with smoke.

"There is smoke and then the fire came out. Stop the car, stop the car! "

In an interview with NBC Bay Area's Cheryl Hurd just days after the fire, Brown expressed grief for the victims, and later, his attorney denied that Brown was on the phone at the time of the fire.

Brown said a language barrier and a misunderstanding prevented him from pulling over sooner.

Brown says: "I?m thinking that she?d like to smoke because they weren?t panicking."

Hernandez-Brown described a volatile relationship with Brown, saying they split up a month before the fire, and earlier, on the day of the fire, police were called to a Walgreens parking lot where the two had argued--and Brown allegedly kicked his wife?s car.

When reached by phone on Sunday by NBC Bay Area, Orville Brown responded to his estranged wife?s claims by saying, ?I have no comment, other than [to say] there will be a full investigation.?

Hernandez-Brown says investigators still have not contacted her.

NBC Bay Area spoke with the San Mateo County District Attorney's office on Sunday, and they said that they would be following up on Hernandez-Brown's claim.

A viewer sent NBC Bay Area the below video from the scene. He said he had no idea people were trapped.?
