Did Hitler Invent the Hitler Mustache?

A picture released in 1938 shows the wax figure of German Nazi Chancellor Adolf Hitler having his moustache combed by a hairdresser at Madame Tussauds Wax museum in London.

J.C. Penney inadvertently sparked controversy by selling a teakettle that critics say looks like Adolf Hitler. The kettle?s handle features an angled black bulge that resembles the F?hrer?s haircut, and its spout is raised in what looks like a Nazi salute. The most striking feature in the photograph is a black stripe down the middle of the kettle that recalls Hitler?s most famous feature: his tiny mustache. How popular was that style of mustache in Hitler?s day?

Not very. Historians regularly refer to Hitler?s famous mustache as a ?toothbrush mustache,? which was a fashionable form of facial hair in the early 20th century, particularly in Northern Europe. The trimmed-down style was a modernist departure from the thick, sweeping whiskers that had been popular in Kaiser Wilhelm II?s Germany. The dashing German soldier and race car driver Hans Koeppen sported the toothbrush mustache, which a 1908 New York Times article referred to as ?characteristic of his class.? German Crown Prince Wilhelm wore a toothbrush during the 1910s. Even a young Walt Disney grew a toothbrush mustache in 1925 to make himself look older in business negotiations. As the oft-told narrative goes, the toothbrush mustache lost popularity when it became inextricably linked to the despised Nazi leader. But this historical tale has a flaw: Hitler?s mustache wasn?t a classic toothbrush. His whiskers were bushier and more narrow and, at best, could only be referred to as a ?variant of the toothbrush style.? Even at the height of his power, many Germans thought Hitler?s facial hair terribly unfashionable.

Bavarians of Hitler?s era referred to his style of mustache as a Rotzbremse, or ?snot brake.? Other nicknames include Fliege (fly), Zweifinger (two-finger), or_Chaplinbart. Prior to Hitler?s rise, the small mustache was primarily associated with Charlie Chaplin, both in the United States and Europe. One company sold Chaplin outfits that relied almost entirely on the mustache to create the resemblance. According to a 1915 issue of Motion Picture Magazine, there was a brief moment of popularity for the Chaplin mustache in America. By most accounts, however, the mustache was never much more than a novelty item or a joke, a fact demonstrated by the style?s other famous wearer: Oliver Hardy.

Some have suggested that Hitler borrowed his grooming style from Charlie Chaplin, but there?s no evidence for the claim. Wherever he got the idea, though, even the F?hrer knew his mustache wasn?t exactly au courant in Germany. When Ernst ?Putzi? Hanfstaengl, one of Hitler?s close friends, urged him to abandon the ?ugly? mustache, Hitler responded, ?If it is not the fashion now, it will be later because I wear it.?

It didn?t quite work out that way, of course. Today, any arrangement of facial hair even vaguely resembling the Hitler mustache is subject to public ridicule. Michael Jordan was teased endlessly for wearing a narrow mustache in a commercial for Hanes underwear. (The faux pas earned him the nickname ?Herr Jordan.?) He eventually reverted to a more traditional mustache. Mockery hasn?t deterred Zimbabwean strongman Robert Mugabe, though. He wears his mustache without shame, and has referred to himself as ?the Hitler of our time.?

Samsung confirms Galaxy S 4 Mini: 4.3-inch display, 1.7 GHz dual-core processor (updated)

Samsung confirms Galaxy S 4 Mini 43inch display, 17 GHz dualcore processor

So, it might not be a surprise that it was in the works, but its official announcement today almost caught us off guard. Here it is, the Samsung Galaxy S 4 Mini. Now we can say for sure that there's a (yet to be specified) 1.7 GHz dual-core processor, Android 4.2.2, GPS, GLONASS, WiFi, 8GB internal memory (expandable up to 64), and 1.5GB of RAM. The display is a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD affair, which will be kept going by a 1,900 mAh battery, with the shooters coming in 8- and 1.9-megapixel resolutions. There's LTE support -- as you'd hope -- in 6 band sets, plus single and dual-SIM 3G versions for certain markets. Color choices are white and black (for now), with no official word on price and availability at this time. Mini, just got bigger it seems.

Update: We may have a clearer idea of when the S 4 Mini will be up for grabs -- in the UK, at least -- as retailer Phones 4U has said it'll be stocking the handset "when it becomes available in the UK in July 2013."

Acer Iconia B1-710 tablet swings by the FCC (updated)

Acer Iconia B1710 tablet swings past the FCC

Back when Acer unveiled the Iconia A1 tablet, it slipped out an upgrade to its starter Iconia B1 series, the B1-710. That refresh has at last surfaced in the US -- through the FCC, anyway. The 7-inch, WiFi-toting slate has cleared the FCC's approval process with its subtle design tweaks and doubled 1GB of RAM in tow. Unfortunately, Americans aren't much closer to actually buying one. While Canadians may get a turn when we've spotted a (currently unconfirmed) $230 Acer Canada listing, the new B1 is primarily bound for Europe. It should cost £110 / €129 (about $166) for the WiFi model's June release, and £129 / €179 (between $195 and $230) for a 3G-equipped B1-711 edition arriving in July.

Update: The Canadian listing now appears to be an A1, not the B1 we saw earlier.

Suspect killed in Texas shootout ID'd as Marine

A 23-year-old Marine has been identified as the suspect in a deadly ? and apparently random ? shooting rampage across west Texas, officials said.

Esteban J. Smith, 23, was killed in a gun battle with authorities early Sunday following a two-hour terror spree that spanned two counties and left one woman dead, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Five others were wounded, including Concho County Sheriff Richard Doane.

Smith, of the Camp Lejeune Marine Corps base in North Carolina, was already wanted for questioning in the homicide of a woman in a Jacksonville, N.C., motel room, base spokesman Master Sgt. J.D. Cress said in a statement.

In Texas, the active duty Marine allegedly opened fire from his pickup truck with an assault rifle as he drove through rural Concho and McCulloch counties, randomly blasting at his victims.

Three people were treated for their wounds in hospitals and discharged. Two others, including Sheriff Doane, remained hospitalized Monday with nonlife-threatening wounds.

RELATED: TWO BROTHERS ARRESTED IN NEW ORLEANS PARADE SHOOTINGS

The mayhem began at about 4:30 a.m., when the gunman shot a driver in the Eden area of Concho County, southeast of San Angelo. She was hospitalized with wounlds that were nonlife-threatening, said Tom Vinger, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Over the next 90 minutes, two more people were shot while sitting in a car at a convenience store in McCulloch County. Both were treated for their wounds and discharged from a hospital, Vinger said.

Shortly after 6 a.m., Alicia Torres, 41, was found dead in her car in Eola, Concho County.

Her cousin said she was parked outside of the family?s home when he heard a car honking.

?Within a few seconds after the horn stopped beeping ... I heard roughly five shots being fired and a vehicle drive off,? Ernest Torres told CBS affiliate KLST.

When he stepped outside, the gunman was gone. His cousin was dead.

RELATED: ALLEGED SHOOTER WHO GUNNED DOWN TWO CALIFORNIA DETECTIVES WAS A 'TICKING TIME BOMB': FATHER

?It?s really random,? Ernest Torres said. ?She was a nice person. She didn?t have any enemies. Why someone would shoot her, we don?t know.?

After peeling away from the scene, Smith crossed paths with Sheriff Doane on a highway north of Eden, authorities said. The suspect fired at Doane, who was wounded in the gunfire and hospitalized.

A state trooper and game warden then arrived and exchanged gunfire with Smith, who was killed, Vinger said.

An assault rifle, handgun and hundreds of rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspect's pickup.

Police were investigating the multiple crime scenes and didn?t immediately say why Smith was in the area.

2-child limit for Muslims in parts of Myanmar

(AP) ? Authorities in Myanmar's western Rakhine state have imposed a two-child limit for Muslim Rohingya families, a policy that does not apply to Buddhists in the area and comes amid accusations of ethnic cleansing in the aftermath of sectarian violence.

Local officials said Saturday that the new measure would be applied to two Rakhine townships that border Bangladesh and have the highest Muslim populations in the state. The townships, Buthidaung and Maundaw, are about 95 percent Muslim.

The unusual order makes Myanmar perhaps the only country in the world to impose such a restriction on a religious group, and is likely to fuel further criticism that Muslims are being discriminated against in the Buddhist-majority country.

China has a one-child policy, but it is not based on religion and exceptions apply to minority ethnic groups. India briefly practiced forced sterilization of men in a bid to control the population in the mid-1970s when civil liberties were suspended during a period of emergency rule, but a nationwide outcry quickly shut down the program.

Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing said the new program was meant to stem rapid population growth in the Muslim community, which a government-appointed commission identified as one of the causes of the sectarian violence.

Although Muslims are the majority in the two townships in which the new policy applies, they account for only about 4 percent of Myanmar's roughly 60 million people.

The measure was enacted a week ago after the commission recommended family planning programs to stem population growth among Muslims, Win Myaing said. The commission also recommended doubling the number of security forces in the volatile region.

"The population growth of Rohingya Muslims is 10 times higher than that of the Rakhine (Buddhists)," Win Myaing said. "Overpopulation is one of the causes of tension."

Sectarian violence in Myanmar first flared nearly a year ago in Rakhine state between the region's Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya. Mobs of Buddhists armed with machetes razed thousands of Muslim homes, leaving hundreds of people dead and forcing 125,000 to flee, mostly Muslims.

Witnesses and human rights groups say riot police stood by as crowds attacked Muslims and burned their villages.

New York-based Human Rights Watch has accused authorities in Rakhine of fomenting an organized campaign of "ethnic cleansing" against the Rohingya.

Since the violence, religious unrest has morphed into a campaign against the country's Muslim communities in other regions.

Containing the strife has posed a serious challenge to President Thein Sein's reformist government as it attempts to make democratic reforms after nearly half a century of harsh military rule. It has also tarnished the image of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been criticized for failing to speak out strongly in defense of the country's embattled Muslim community.

The central government has not made any statement about the two-child policy, which was introduced at a local level. Calls seeking comment Saturday from two government spokesmen were not immediately returned, but Rakhine state official Myo Than said all local policies require "consent from the central government."

Win Myaing said authorities had not yet determined how the measures ? which include a ban on polygamy ? will be enforced. The policy will not apply yet to other parts of Rakhine state, which have smaller Muslim populations.

In its report issued last month, the government-appointed commission wrote: "One factor that has fueled tensions between the Rakhine public and (Rohingya) populations relates to the sense of insecurity among many Rakhines stemming from the rapid population growth of the (Rohingya), which they view as a serious threat."

Predominantly Buddhist Myanmar does not include the Rohingya as one of its 135 recognized ethnicities. It considers them to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship. Bangladesh says the Rohingya have been living in Myanmar for centuries and should be recognized there as citizens.

China has been carrying out a planned birth policy since the late 1970s, generally limiting one child to urban couples and no more than two to rural families, to stem rapid population growth that Beijing believes is not sustainable economically and environmentally.

Don't let strangers in, even in Paris

When a man in work clothes showed up at her door, the Monitor's Europe bureau chief let him inside. But fortunately, he didn't get a chance to pull off a well-known Parisian scam.

I suppose that in moving from Mexico City to Paris, and feeling a sudden burst of elation for not having to worry so intently about drug and gang violence and, worst of all kidnapping, I went to the extreme.

A man knocked on the door of our temporary apartment saying he needed to check on something and asked if he could come in. He must have said what he was checking but my French, only now on its way back after lying dormant for over two decades, missed the details. He was dressed in work clothes, and I let him in.

He first said he was looking for the heater panel, then started asking all kinds of questions about who we were and how long we?d been in France. I thought this was a bit bizarre, but didn't think much of it.

Then he spotted the chimney. He opened the screen: ?Oh no, look at all of this soot.? (I had to look up the word for soot, suie, on my laptop.)

?You have a small child,? he went on. ?If she breathes this in, it could be the end. I am obligated to fix this.?

In my daze of jetlag, living out of suitcases, with a mountain of bureaucracy to tackle each day, I actually thought this man might be from the city government, and he was doing his municipal duty, for free, to make sure no Paris residents ? even foreigners, God bless France! ? breathe contaminated air.

I almost let him get to work ? until my more rational husband said, ?Let?s call the owner first.?

The owner's response was immediate: ?Get that guy out of the house now.?

I learned later that it?s a well-known scam in Paris that plumbers or electricians and other workers will come in, and tell you you need X, Y, and Z fixed. A colleague told me one man entered her house, broke a pipe, and then tried to get them to pay to fix it. I told the guardian downstairs about our visitor, and she said any communal or municipal work to be done will always be posted in the building.

Some of these scams are actually done by thieves, she said, who might rob you ? or worse. ?Don?t let anyone in your house. It could be very dangerous.?

I did learn back in elementary school not to talk to strangers, and most definitely not to let them through the front door.

But I had a momentary lapse of judgment, a good reminder that you have to be careful anywhere ? even in Paris!

G Data InternetSecurity 2014

We're almost five months into 2013, and you know what that means, right? Yes, it's time for the 2014 security product lines to appear! G Data InternetSecurity 2014 is the first security suite I've reviewed that has 2014 in its name, but others will be along soon enough.

At $44.95 for three licenses, G Data costs less than many of its competitors. Even Ad-Aware Pro Security 10.5 costs $48. And G Data comes with a full complement of suite features, adding the antispam and parental control components that Ad-Aware lacks. Some of the components work very well, others aren't quite as impressive.

New Interface
G Data's 2014 product line boasts a brand-new user interface with big, touch-friendly buttons that select among five important pages: SecurityCenter, Virus protection, Firewall, Parental controls, and Autostart Manager. Many security products use a green banner when everything's fine, changing to yellow or red if there's a problem. G Data's window is always red across the top, but icons on the SecurityCenter page change to point out areas needing attention.

G Data AntiVirus 2014 shares a lot with this suite. It has the exact same SecurityCenter, Virus protection, and Autostart Manager pages; it just lacks Firewall and Parental controls.

Mixed Antivirus Protection
Since the antivirus component of this suite has exactly the same capabilities as G Data AntiVirus 2014, I'll simply summarize my findings here. You can get full details in my review of the antivirus.

I hit some snags during G Data's cleanup of my twelve malware-infested test systems. The antivirus scanner mistakenly quarantined some essential Windows files, leaving two of the systems unbootable. Recovery required use of the G Data Boot Medium, a German keyboard layout chart, and a cram course in Linux. Whew!

G Data scored poorly in my malware removal test, with a detection rate of 58 percent and an overall score of 4.3 points, both values the lowest of all products tested using my current malware collection. Kaspersky PURE 3.0 Total Security scored best in this group, with 6.0 points, though Ad-Aware Pro's 83 percent detection rate was highest.

Tested against my previous malware collection, Norton Internet Security (2013), Webroot SecureAnywhere Complete 2013, and Comodo Internet Security Complete 2013 all scored 6.6 points. For details on this test's methodology, see How We Test Malware Removal.

Related Story

G Data fared much better in my malware blocking test, detecting 92 percent of the samples and scoring 9.2 points. Only Ad-Aware Pro scored better against the same samples, with 94 percent detection and 9.4 points. Webroot did best among products tested with the previous collection, scoring a near-perfect 9.9 points. For a full explanation of this malware blocking test, see How We Test Malware Blocking.

Related Story

When I tried to download the same malware samples again, G Data blocked all access to many at the URL level. It wiped out others during the course of the download process. Its behavior blocker properly left valid PCMag utilities alone while blocking actual malware.

The independent testing labs give G Data's technology good marks overall. It scored especially well in tests by AV-Comparatives, earning ADVANCED+ (the top rating) in two tests and ADVANCED in a third. Note, though, that Bitdefender Internet Security 2013 earned top marks from all of the labs I follow. For more about the labs and the tests they run, see How We Interpret Antivirus Lab Tests

Attacking MRSA with metals from antibacterial clays

May 18, 2013 ? In the race to protect society from infectious microbes, the bugs are outrunning us. The need for new therapeutic agents is acute, given the emergence of novel pathogens as well as old foes bearing heightened antibiotic resistance.

Shelley Haydel, a researcher at Arizona State University's Biodesign Institute has a new approach to developing effective, topical antibacterial agents -- one that draws on a naturally occurring substance recognized since antiquity for its medicinal properties: clay.

In research appearing in the journal PLOS ONE, Haydel and her graduate student, Caitlin Otto, lay out the case for clay, demonstrating that certain varieties of clay have the ability to aggressively kill a range of pathogens including E. coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) -- a stubborn, highly contagious, and dangerous pathogen that has lately been the scourge of many hospitals and is a common cause of skin infections in the community. Their study further indicates that, rather than the physical particles of the clays, particular metal ions attached to the clay are likely responsible for its potent antibacterial properties.

"While some natural clays, which have absorptive properties similar to sponges, have been used topically for centuries, scientific studies investigating the antibacterial mechanisms represent a relatively new area of research," Haydel says. "With this study, we have demonstrated that the antibacterial activity of these natural clays is not dependent on the physical clay particles, but rather the abiotic, microbicidal activities of specific metal ions desorbed from the clay surface. While we are still working on mechanism of action studies, determining that specific metal ions influenced antibacterial activity was critical in leading us in the appropriate scientific directions."

Medical use of clay has a storied history. As early as 5000 years ago, clay was listed in the ancient tablets of Nippur as a wound-healing medicament. Around 1600 BC, the Ebers Papyrus -- recognized as the world's oldest medical text -- recommended clay for ailments including diarrhea, dysentery, tapeworm, hookworm, wounds, and abscesses. Clays came into common use in the 19th century as topical treatments for surgical wounds, demonstrating their beneficial effects for pain management, inflammation, putrefaction, and healing processes.

In their current study, Otto and Haydel examined four clay samples and their respective aqueous mineral extracts or leachates and determined that the clays exhibited different in vitro antibacterial activities against E. coli and MRSA. Mineralogically, the samples were nearly identical with 52 percent clay and 48 percent non-clay minerals, but the composition of metal ions released from the mineral surfaces varied considerably across the samples. The tests, using aqueous mineral leachates of the four clay samples, uncovered a variety of elements in varying concentrations. Based on previous studies, the research team focused on five metal ions -- iron (Fe), copper (Cu), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn).

When non-antibacterial clays with low concentrations of these five critical metal ions were supplemented with higher amounts and the pH was matched with that of antibacterial clays, the new formulation displayed killing ability against E. coli and MRSA. The result pointed to the presence of metal ions in sufficient concentration as the antibacterial agent in the clay. Further tests narrowed the field of antibacterial candidates, establishing Fe+2, Cu+2, and Zn+2 ions as contributing antibacterial agents.

While the pH level was found to play a mediating role, the lethal effect of the clays could not be attributed exclusively to pH, absent the influence of metal ions. Metal speciation modeling and statistical analysis of the results indicated that Cu+2, Co+2, Ni+2, and Zn+2 are effective against E. coli, while Cu+2, Co+2, and Zn+2 are effective against MRSA. Intriguingly, the study found that the metal ion toxicity of a given clay sample is not always proportional to the total ion concentration. Toxicity instead is critically dependent on a variety of other factors including pH, ion solubility, osmotic strength, and temperature. The tests undertaken helped to evaluate the interplay of these factors in determining both the antibacterial effectiveness and toxicity of the samples.

Haydel notes that physical and chemical properties of minerals contained in clays together contribute to healing properties. Minerals contained in clay mixtures have a negative surface charge that allows the free exchange of compounds from the environment, including bacteria, viruses, proteins, nucleic acids, and cations. Kaolinite, talc, and smectite clay minerals are highly absorptive. Due to their ability to adhere to the skin, clays offer mechanical protection similar to a bandage, sealing out external physical or chemical agents, as well as absorptive properties which assist in removing devitalized tissue, particulate matter, or foreign materials from a wound.

Haydel is optimistic about the potential for medicinal clays to play a greater therapeutic role, particularly against the growing threat of topical and antibiotic-resistant infections:

"We have demonstrated that mineralogically-identical clays exhibit chemical variability which correlates with variability in antibacterial activity. Since clays can contain toxic metals, such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury, safety precautions must be in place to minimize exposure to toxic ions. Efforts must be taken to standardize the composition and antibacterial efficacy of clays if they are to be used therapeutically and prophylactically."

Bill clears House for wider SEC economic analyses

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Legislation cleared the House on Friday that would place stricter requirements on the federal agency overseeing Wall Street to assess the costs and benefits of its regulations before they are issued.

The bill passed on a 235-161 vote mostly on party lines. It was the latest salvo against the Securities and Exchange Commission by House Republicans, who opposed the 2010 financial overhaul legislation expanding the SEC's powers and have resisted increasing its budget. Congress enacted the regulatory overhaul in response to the 2008 financial crisis with an eye to preventing another meltdown.

Friday's bill isn't expected to get a vote in the Senate. It would require the SEC to refrain from adopting rules unless it determines that the benefits of the rules outweigh the costs. The agency currently conducts cost-benefit analyses of regulations prior to issuing them. But the bill would make the process more extensive and detailed.

In addition, the SEC would be required to review all its existing rules to determine if they impose excessive costs or administrative burdens on the companies regulated by the agency.

Democratic lawmakers said that would force the agency to review every rule put into effect since its creation during the Great Depression, with no additional funding for SEC staff.

The bill seeks to hinder the SEC's ability to write new rules under the 2010 financial overhaul and to shield Wall Street from regulation, the Democrats charged.

The legislation "is aimed squarely at undermining Wall Street's cop on the block," Rep. Maxine Waters of California, the senior Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, said on the House floor before the vote. "This is dangerous; it is irresponsible. This is about protecting Wall Street."

In addition to tying up SEC staff resources, the requirement for more extensive and detailed cost-benefit analyses would put the agency at greater risk of being sued over each rule it adopts, the Democrats said. They said that while they support cost-benefit analyses by federal agencies, they object to imposing excessive requirements on the SEC.

The White House registered its opposition to the bill on Wednesday, saying it would add "burdensome and disruptive new procedures (that) would impede the ability of the SEC to protect investors, maintain orderly and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation."

SEC Chairman Mary Jo White told the financial services panel in a hearing Thursday that she is "a firm supporter of rigorous economic analysis," which the agency has been conducting. "I do have concerns about this bill in terms of our being able to carry out our rulemaking function expeditiously, and to provide market participants with certainty," she testified.

But Republicans insisted the change was needed to help curb runaway regulations written in Washington that hurt ordinary Americans by raising costs for businesses.

"What it is really about is kitchen-table economics," said Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, chairman of the Financial Services Committee.

The Republicans have long targeted the SEC by proposing legislation to weaken various provisions of the financial overhaul law. Their opposition has been galvanized in recent days with the revelations that the Internal Revenue Service gave tougher treatment to tea party and other conservative groups seeking tax-exempt status.

At Thursday's hearing, committee Republicans seized on the episode to tell White that if the SEC adopted a rule requiring public companies to disclose political donations, as consumer and liberal groups have urged, it would be engaging in a similar abuse of power as the IRS.

The SEC is an independent regulatory agency. The IRS is a division of the Treasury Department, which is part of the Obama administration.

Among other things, the bill would require the SEC to adopt rules only after a "reasoned determination" that their benefits would outweigh their costs, to identify and assess possible alternatives to proposed rules, to gauge the potential impact of rules on investors and small business, and to periodically review existing rules to determine if they are overly burdensome, outdated or weak.

A large coalition of consumer, union and liberal groups said in a letter to House lawmakers that the bill "is transparently intended to create roadblocks in the way of passing any investor protection rule."

Maruti to extend an helping hand to Suzuki Motorcycles India

Maruti Suzuki has been the market leader in the passenger car business by a clear margin while Suzuki Motorcycle India (SMIPL) hasn?t been making any significant progress after it parted ways with TVS about 12 years ago.

The two wheeler unit has a meager market share of 3% which is nowhere near the bigwigs like Hero, Bajaj and TVS. Suzuki?s HQ in Japan is now feeling the need to do something to improve the Suzuki Motorcycle?s Indian prospects.

In an attempt to organize its operations in India, the Japanese automaker is planning to create a synergy between Maruti Suzuki and Suzuki Motorcycle India. The move would include deputing Maruti Suzuki personnel in key departments of Suzuki Motorcycle like production, supply chain and human resources.

Suzuki has two completely different stories in India with their four wheeler and two wheeler businesses.

Livemint.com reports that Mr. S.Y. Siddiqui, COO (human resources and administration) of Maruti Suzuki has already extended his services to the two-wheeler subsidiary as well. More such service extensions in the field of component sourcing and production are expected to happen in the near future.

Confirming the development, Maruti?s spokesperson has told Live Mint that, ?Maruti Suzuki routinely collaborates with suppliers for bulk buying of material. This benefits the company as well as the supplier. Similar synergies with SMIPL are being considered.

With the synergy between the two entities, Suzuki could stabilize its ailing two wheeler subsidiary.

Galaxy's 'burning ring of fire' is frenetic region of star formation

May 16, 2013 ? Johnny Cash may have preferred this galaxy's burning ring of fire to the one he sang about falling into in his popular song. The "starburst ring" seen at center in red and yellow hues is not the product of love, as in the song, but is instead a frenetic region of star formation.

The galaxy, a spiral beauty called Messier 94, is located about 17 million light-years away. In this image from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, infrared light is represented in different colors, with blue having the shortest wavelengths and red, the longest.

Starburst rings like this can often be triggered by gravitational encounters with other galaxies but, in this case, may have instead been caused by the galaxy's oval shape. Gas in the ring is being converted into hot, young stars, which then warm the dust, causing it to glow with infrared light.

The outer, faint blue ring around the galaxy might be an optical illusion. Astronomers think that two separate spiral arms appear as a single unbroken ring when viewed from our position in space.

Brent slips, stays below $104 on demand worries, firm dollar

By Manash Goswami

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Brent futures slipped on Friday, staying below $104 as bleak U.S. economic data revived worries about demand growth in the world's biggest oil consumer, while a stronger dollar also pressured prices.

Barring news on major supply disruption, the dollar will be a key driver for oil with investors increasingly expecting the greenback's recent surge to peter out.

Brent slipped 5 cents to $103.73 a barrel by 0552 GMT. It is expected to end the week mostly unchanged. U.S. oil was up 18 cents at $95.34, after settling up 86 cents, but was on track to end a three-week winning run.

"The dollar will influence oil quite a bit over the next few sessions because at some point it will start to weaken as it has strengthened too much in recent days," said Tetsu Emori, a commodities sales manager at Astmax Investments in Tokyo.

"All U.S. economic indications in the last few days have been weak and that is raising doubts about demand."

The U.S. economy showed fresh signs of slowing in the second quarter, with factory activity slipping in the mid-Atlantic region while groundbreaking declined at home construction sites.

POLICY DOVE

The strong dollar and a weak outlook for demand will keep Brent trading in a $103 to $105 range next week, while the U.S. contract will swing between $95 and $98, Emori said.

The dollar held firm near a 10-month high against a basket of major currencies on Friday after a regional Fed chief, long seen as a policy dove, said the Fed could begin easing up on stimulus this summer and end it late this year.

A firm dollar pressures oil as its strength makes commodities more expensive for holders of other currencies.

Brent has risen about $7 from the low of under $97 for the year touched on April 18. The U.S. contract has gained nearly $10 since the 2013 low of $85.61 was touched on the same day.

The difference between the U.S. benchmark and Brent widened beyond $10 per barrel for the first time since May 7 in the previous session, and was at about $8 on Friday. It hit a 2013 low of $7.20 earlier this week.

However, uncertainty over political tensions in the Middle East cushioned oil prices, with Russia's foreign minister saying Iran must take part in a proposed international conference to try to end Syria's civil war.

Charts show that Brent is expected to drop to $102.42 as it failed to break a resistance at $104.13, while U.S. oil is expected to revisit its Thursday low of $93.23, said Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.
